Sitnasuak Native Corporation (SNC) is pleased to announce Dr. Barbara Qasuġlana Amarok is the new Chair of the Board of Directors effective June 1, 2019. She was selected for the leadership position as part of the annual Board reorganization process following the 45^th Annual Meeting of Shareholders.

Dr. Amarok brings strong experience and advanced education to successfully lead SNC into the future.  She was first elected to the Board of Directors in 2011 and has served in the following SNC positions: Board Assistant Secretary, Vice-Chair of the Elders Committee, Vice-Chair of the Bylaws and Personnel Committee, Chair and Secretary/Treasurer of Sitnasuak Financial Services, LLC.

Dr. Amarok said, “I am grateful for the trust Shareholders and Board members have placed in me. I think the Corporation has done very well, and as Chair, I look forward to carrying out Sitnasuak’s strategic plan and finding opportunities to improve communications with Shareholders. Increasing education and career opportunities for Shareholders will also be among my priorities as we continue to build on our strong foundation. As a board, it is our responsibility to listen to what Shareholders have to say, and I will continue to place them at the forefront of every decision I make as Chair.”

Currently, Dr. Amarok also serves as the Executive Director of the Bering Sea Women’s Group based in Nome, adjunct faculty with the University of Alaska Fairbanks – Northwest Campus, board member for the Association of Alaska School Boards (AASB), board member for Nome Public Schools, member of the Education Compact Committee for First Alaskans Institute, member of the Advisory Council for the University of Alaska College of Education, and member of the Alaska Native Collaborative Hub for Research on Resiliency (ANCHRR).

According to outgoing Sitnasuak Chair Bobby Evans, “It has been truly an honor and privilege to serve as Chairman since 2013. SNC is a strong village corporation, and we have seen positive growth in revenue as well as in our management team. SNC attracts the best and the brightest people that want to work for Sitnasuak. We have seen record dividends and Shareholder benefits. All Shareholders can be proud of their Corporation.”

He also shared, “I have decided to transition from the Board chair position as my family and I have big plans for 2019 and 2020. We will be moving from Nome in the coming months; however, you will see us back throughout the year to visit, hunt, fish and to enjoy our beautiful lands. Thank you for your continued support. Mr. Evans will continue to serve on the SNC Board of Directors with a term serving through the 46^th Annual Meeting.

The following are the new officers of the Corporation elected by the Board of Directors on June 1, 2019: Dr. Barbara Qasuġlana Amarok, Chair; Gloria Karmun, First Vice-Chair; Andrew C. Miller, Jr. Second Vice-Chair; Becka Baker, Treasurer; and Helen Bell, Secretary.
